Pet Insurance is a Good Thing for Your Daschund

When Odie ruptured his disk, we did not (still do not) have pet insurance. His surgery ran into the thousands. Lucky for him, we were able to afford the necessary care to ensure a successful recovery.

But for many dachshund owners, they cannot afford the cost of surgery which leads to putting down their favorite doxie or leaving him paralyzed for life.

Check with your Vet to see what plans are offered.

You want a pet health insurance plan that will meet your financial needs as well as be accepted by your local veterinarian.

Can anyone tell me around how much the laser surgery cost, and the other one. And would the insurance cover the surgery. Thanks for your help.

Odie’s surgery ran over $5,000. The pet hospital said they took just about every pet insurance on the market but you should check first before buying a policy.

I’m going through this as of Saturday. I am completely devestated and can’t hold myself together. I am so pissed that even the emergency clinic in my area said that it would be Monday before they can do anything for Harley. I know for the best chance of recovery, the surgery needs to take place 24-48 hours after the rupture. I’m so afraid that it is going to be to late for them to do anything. He is going to have the Myleo-something in the morning “when they can fit him in”. I hope I just don’t totally loose it in the surgeons office, and kick someones a**. Was the $5 g’s just for the surgery, or does that include care, meds, tests etc.?

Harley’s Mom, I’m sorry to hear about your boy. I was completely devastated when I took Odie in that morning when he couldn’t walk. I know exactly how you feel.

Odie may have injured himself on a Saturday. By Sunday he wasn’t playing. Monday he was at the Vet with a ruptured disk. So 24-48 Hrs is not unusual for a good chance of recovery.

The total cost of the procedure included surgery, care, meds, tests, etc. The Myelogram is an x-ray examination by a radiologist to determine the extent of the damage in the spine. My Doctor want to follow it up with a CT (Computed Tomography).

It also included four or five follow-up visits over the next 3 months.

Thanks for the relpy so quickly. I feel a little bit better about what I am going to hear tomorrow. I have never been as upset about anything in my entire life. He is like one of my kids. He is only 7, and my dachshunds usually live to be 16+. I had my baby Morti, put down last Aug. at 16 yrs. I don’t know if I can handle another devestating loss so soon. Please pray for us.
    Thanks! Jayla
