Would You Clone Your Dog?

This PR caught my eye today and I wondered if I would clone my Dachshunds:

American Company to Offer Dog Cloning Service at International Public Auction
BioArts International (BioArts), today announced that it will sell five dog cloning service slots to the general public via a worldwide, online auction to be held June 18th.

The first thought that cross my mind was “would the ‘new’ Odie have back problems.” That is, cloning should produce the same genetic defects, could I relive the pain Odie went through when he ruptured his disk? Probably not.

Then again, if the ruptured disk was injury related, and not genetic, I probably could.

Would he have the same temperament? That seems to be environmental so he would be a different dog.

Sorry, somethings are best left alone. Would you clone your Dachshund?

I don’t have a doxie (I’ve got two italian greyhounds though), but I would never clone a dog. For a couple of reasons, really. First of all the animal might not even look the same. They’ve done cat cloning and the cats were born with different markings and colours. Temperament IS very environmental and does depend on how an animal is raised. And also, a lot of times cloned animals develop strange ailments and seem to age a lot faster than normal. So even health can’t be guaranteed. Its just too iffy, and you wouldn’t get the same animal at all, from what it seems.

But there are SO many great dogs that are already alive and well and are thrown in shelters and euthanized daily. Why pay insane money for experiments in creating animals when there are so many already that need rescuing? Adopting a new animal and moving on isn’t replacing the previous lost pet, its gaining a new friend.
