We switched our dachshunds over to a new homemade pumpkin and chicken dog food recipe. Chloe – who is very finicky – just loves it.
The main reason we switched to this diet is to bulk up Odie’s poops so it will help him express his anal glands naturally.
It’s very simple to make. I just pick up frozen chicken breasts from CostCo and a small can of pumpkin. Two breasts are defrosted in a microwave for about 20 min and then cooked about 7 minutes on high until done.
I slice the breasts into small pieces and add a can of pumpkin. It makes about 6 servings for a small dog a miniature daschund. Total cost runs around $0.75 per serving which is cheaper and far better than normal dog food.

This is a great idea. Did you come up with the recipe yourself or find it on the internet? I have two dachshunds..I am new to the dachshund world so I’m researching anything I can find about them.
Have you ever had or heard of a dachshund having sensitive skin on their bellies? After a run through the tall grass and weeds on my small farm my 1 year old dachshund seems to get lots of little bumps all over her belly, legs and neck. They don’t seem to bother her, but they make me worry. So, anyway, you seemed like someone who would know about these dachshund things, just thought I’d ask. Hi Lisa, the Chicken and pumpkin food recipe is my contraption. I was giving them Chicken and rice but the Vet said that is what you give them if they have diarrhea. The Vet recommended replacing the rice with pumpkin for fiber and nutrition.
I have three doxies as well. Sheeba is 10, Belle will be 10 in Nov. and Lady is 9. I like your idea about this recipe. How many ounces do you give each doxie? I would like to start giving mine this and split it with their dry food. They eat Wellness Core and love it but it so expensive, so I’m trying to figure out a way to make the dry food last alot longer with 3 doxies. Did you get the pumpkin in Costco as well? I couldn’t find in any other store because they said it is seasonal. Thanks.
Each serving is about 3-4oz depending on the size of the chicken breasts. I haven’t found pumpkin at Costco, but if you live in the CA, NV or AZ, Fresh and Easy markets carry the 30 oz cans of pumpkin for about the same price you would pay for the 16 oz can.
I am going to try this recipe on my long haired miniature daschund and will let you know how it works, I am axious because he is so finicky that I can hardly get him to eat the same thing twice, and it is store bought, so I would feel better providing something he likes, homemade sounds great, and anyone out their that could me some tips on their ears, would be greatfully appreciated, seems that whenever the wind blows, the ears flip, and he doesn’t care, he leaves them that way, I tend to be flipping them back whenever I notice, because he gets ear aches from wind, and then ear infections, which the last one was a double ear infection, I can’t keep the ears down, he is seven months, any ideas would be greatfully appreciated!!! thanks Annie.
Odie had a terrible ear infection when he was a puppy. We kept his ears flipped back to dry out the fungus. When we give our Doxies baths, we’re really careful at keep water out of their ears.
Question as I’m new to these dogs…do you feed them only the pumpkin and chicken? Do you mix it with their regular hard food? I would really love to get away from the commercial dog foods and have something homemade for my mini.

You’re welcome Christan! The only commercial food they eat is Begg’n strips and milkbones. We’ve found a dog biscuit cookbook and will start switching over to those soon.

I’m in Australia and I just ‘inherited’ a beautiful little fellow who needed a new home. He’s a miniature dachshund and we don’t get tinned pumpkin here so I’ve got a couple of questions!
If I just cook and mash fresh pumpkin is that the same as what you have in the tin, or does it have sugar or anything added to it? And are these portion size recommendations for regular or miniature dachies?

Joolz, cooked and mashed up pumpkin is the same thing you get in the tin. No sugar is added. The portion size is for a mini.

i have a mini 3.5 month dachshund. She eats ANYTHING –
ive started cooking her food but want to be sure it all sounds right
Per day she gets
1/3 chicken breast
1/3 sweet mashed potatoe
some steamed spinach and baby marrow
1/4 tea spoon of spirulina
does this sound right for her? also very new but im not happpy about giving her commercial food

I recently learned that my new 3 month old dachshund pup has anal gland problems as well and I have been lost as to what to do for him about this problem. i’ve been giving him pineapple in his dog food to keep him from eating his poop because apparently it still smells ‘delicious’ to him when it’s coming out. So far it has worked, but i’m excited to try your recipe, with a little added pineapple. Do you have any suggestions, tips, or experience with any of your dachshunds enjoying their poop the second time around? Thanks in advance!
Hi! I am very new to the miniature dachshund world, and the dog world in general. Oscar is my first dog ever and he was born on March 27, 2010…he’s solid chocolate and the cutest thing I’ve ever seen
However, I have a question regarding his food and his weight. He is already 10 lbs! My vet says that is normal, but I thought he might be putting too much weight on too soon.
Could you tell me if he is eating too much??? Sometimes it seems like a lot, and sometimes I feel like he isn’t getting enough!
3 oz. of Wellness Puppy Formula wet food in the morning.
1/4 cup of Wellness Puppy Formula dry food in the middle of the day.
3 oz. of Wellness Puppy Formula wet food in the evening.

Congratulations and welcome to the Dachshund World! I’m sure Oscar is very cute as are all dachshunds. The amount of food is about the same amount we feed our Doxies when they were his age and they grow up really fast. What you want to do is to make sure that he does not become overweight and try to keep his weight in the low teens to reduce the load on his back to prevent possible injuries.
