How Big Do Doxens Get?

3/22/2008
By: Dachshund Lover

One reader recently asked asked “How big do Doxens Get?”

Miniature Dachshunds are smaller than the standard Dachshund and typically do not exceed 11 lbs. Standard Dachshunds weigh in at at hefty 20 lbs all the way up to 32 lbs.

There are also Tweeny Dachshunds which are between the mini and standard breed. I really believe that these dogs are just overweight minis.

Our three Dachshunds are minis. Both Molly and Chloe are the same physical size, and both overweight at 15 and 12 lbs. They’re about 18 inches long and about 8 inches tall.

Odie weighs in at 14 lbs and is the same height as the girls, but is about 2 inches longer.

Suzanne Pleshette, 70, ‘Ugly Dachshund’ Actress, Dies

Ugly Dachshund

It is sad day for Dachshund Owners around the world. Suzanne Pleshette, died today at the age of 70. She battled lung cancer and died of respiratory failure at her home on Saturday.

Ms. Pleshette, who stared in many movies and sitcoms, perhaps popularized the Dachshund in the late sixties when she stared as Fran Garrison in Disney’s The Ugly Dachshund. Fran, a proud owner of several dachshunds, notably her prize winning Chloe.

Her husband Mark Garrision, played by Dean Jones, decided he needed a manly dog and buys a Great Dane, “Brutus,” which thinks it is a Dachshund.

The Ugly Dachshund undoubtedly started our collection of Dachshunds, Chloe, Odie and Molly. Chloe, of course, is named after the Dachshund in the movie. Odie’s original name was “Brutus” keeping with the theme of the movie. Molly has no relationship to the movie. We just love her!

Ms. Pleshette will be missed by the Doxies.

Whose Day is it to pick up the Poop?

12/15/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

Today is Saturday morning. My day of rest, relaxation and off the Dachshund poop-picking-up detail until Monday!

With three Dachshunds, you get three times the production of the little stuff that needs to get picked up just about everyday. Thank goodness they’re housebroken!

When we only had Chloe, the happy moment of cleaning up took place once a week, the morning the gardener came to mow the lawn and blow a few leaves around. Chloe is really good about doing her business in the privacy of the bushes, so it was never a big chore cleaning up after her.

But with Odie and Molly, they like to do it on the patio and sidewalk where everyone can see it (or if they can’t see it, step in it). So cleaning up becomes a necessity.

I still like my once a week cleaning schedule, but my wife convinced me that it should be done everyday. With a little negotiation, it’s now a Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning operation and she would take care of the weekends.

Today is Saturday! Tomorrow is Sunday! It could be my imagination, but I really think these Dachshunds poop more on Sunday night than during the rest of the week.

Home Alone

10/16/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

We’re going on vacation and we’re planning to leave our Dachshunds home alone for about a week. Do you think they can hold it that long?

Actually, our Son is staying home alone with them so they should be fine… If he remembers to feed and water them and let them out to poddy…

I’m sure they will be just fine, but there’s always that nagging feeling leaving your dogs for a long period of time that they’ll just get into trouble.

You know how Doxies are? They’re so mischievous when they’re alone. If I just remember to phone home and leave a message on the answering machine, I’m sure they’ll stay out of trouble.

I know that Chloe will stop eating for a few days and Odie and Molly will get an extra meal out of it. By the time the week is up, they’ll be back to normal and probably wont miss us.

Note to self: Remember to bring back squeaky toys!

Two Dachshunds, Two Anal Gland Problems

9/14/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

For the second time within a month, one of our Dachshunds had an infected anal glad. This time, Chloe’s abscessed and nearly ruptured.

Unlike Odie, it was a complete surprise since she was acting normal until late Sunday night where she started hiding behind the downstairs toilet.

I knew exactly what it was from Odie’s recent problem, so all I could do is hope that it wouldn’t burst until the morning when I could get her to the Vet.

She had to stay the day at the Vet Monday to let Dr. Thomas drain the abscess and recover from the anesthesia.

Chloe happy to come home, was not too happy about the hood she has to wear for a few days until her butt sore heals. The antibiotics and an anti-inflammatory really seems to be doing the job!

I asked Dr. Thomas if there was a relationship between Odie and Chloe anal gland infections and he said no. This is good since I sure don’t want Molly to go thru the same experience.

Express Your Anal Glands

8/6/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

For the past week or so, Odie has be crying when he poops. On top of that he’s been scooching his butt on the carpet.

Dr. Thomas, our great Vet at Midtown Veterinary Clinic, examined Odie today and found that Odie’s anal glands were swollen.

Dr. T. expressed those glands and out came that clear smelly stuff which is good since it was clear and not infected.

He said we caught it early, since usually what happens is that swollen glands will abscess and burst open. Then you have a big problem.

Odie managed to get a sore on his butt from dragging it on the carpet or licking it to much to relieve the swollen glands. Odie is on antibiotics for 10 days to clear up the infection and his fecal examine came back negative for parasites.

The Doxies are happy vacation is over

The dogs are happy that we’re back at work this week. They can go back to their routine of sleeping all day long.

The past few days they didn’t know what to do with them selfs. As soon as it hit 9:00 PM, they were the first in bed and asleep before their heads hit the pillow.

For once, Odie didn’t get up during the night to ask to go out. This meant a peaceful night sleep for all of us. Regardless of being on vacation, he got us up bright and early at 6:00 AM. So much for sleeping in.

Daddy’s Birthday

5/21/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

Today we celebrated my birthday, 6 dog years young and I still feel like a young pup.

My wife took us out Hungry Hunter and had a really nice dinner and enjoyable evening. We’re “practicing” vegetarians so when you go to a Steak House, you know gets the meat — the Three Doxies. Of course we enjoyed the sides which was more than enough food for two meals.

I never seen three dogs enjoy such a good meal before. The couldn’t wait for me to cut it up into bite size pieces. They really like it when we bring home steaks for them, but they’re worth it!

Bad Hair Week

5/10/2007
By: Dachshund Lover

Molly is having a bad hair week. Now she runs away when I try to take her picture.

It started last Saturday with her bath. She needed the loose strands of her baby-fine hair around her ears trimmed so they would stop tangling and getting into knots.

But she kept wiggling and got a bad hair cut. I told her to stop moving but she insisted on watching my every move. Now she’s got lopsided bowl cut, but at least she smells good, at least until she goes outside and rolls in the dirt.
