We added “Roxie Doxie” to our Dachshund Figurine collection last weekend during our shopping spree the little Danish tourist town of Solvang. Solvang is about the only place where you can shop and find glass and porcelain dog figurines of all sorts of breeds.
Of course, we are biased towards the Dachshund since we have three of them. Plus we sorta miss our dogs when were away from home and always find one that looks like Chole or Odie to keep us company during the trip. I’ve never seen one that looks like Molly since she is by far prettier than most long red haired Dachshund figurines (even with her knots and tangles in her fur).
From the looks of it, the great recession hit the local economy real hard and most stores were having sales on everything. The typical comment a store owner would state was “20% off store-wide sale.”
Unfortunately at Rasmussen’s, where we picked up “Roxie,” they were not having a sale. But she was cute an my wife liked her. (Now Roxie is in my office instead of my wife’s full curio cabinet.)
At Berengaria, they didn’t have the normal Dachshund gifts and only had Pug and Chiwawa things to buy. We’ve purchase the most unusual and unique Doxie things from there and I recommend stopping by just to see what they have or even if it is to say “hello.”
It’s hard to tell when the next time we’re heading up there but you never know, Christmas is just around the corner and there is always someone in my family that likes Dachshund figurines.
One of these days I need to compose and sing a Dachshund Song … after all I do sing to my doxies everyday. But for now, you can enjoy a really good song about dogs:
Dachshunds are escape artists! When Molly was a puppy, she would always escape her pen during the day to greet us at the door. We always put the blame on our son for letting the puppy run around the house when she was not quite potty trained.
But now we know the truth… Odie had a helping nose in it and let his little friend out!
I often wonder what my Dachshunds do all day at home when we’re off at work or shopping. But it seems to me that Seattle dog portrait artistNancy Schutt has inside information on what Chloe, Odie and Molly are doing when we’re away.
I received a very clever email from Nancy asking if I would consider reviewing her new site. Normally, I turn down such requests, but since she said she was a dog portrait artist and attached a few of her wiener dog paintings, the least I could do is take a quick look.
I love art, especially wiener dog art. My home office is covered with all sorts of Dachshund paintings and drawings. My first peek at her painting simply got me laughing! Here’s a picture of my three dogs on our good sofa; Molly on top looking out the window; Odie on the foot stool; and Chloe getting ready to run to the door to greet us.
I just had to see her site…
Besides being a really good dog portrait artist, Nancy demonstrates abstractness with a keen sense of dog humor. I rolled out of my chair laughing at Schooooch Pooch (my name) where a dog is enjoying his ride a little too much across a very expensive carpet.
I enjoyed visiting Nancy’s site. See paints really Good Dog Art!
The Dachshund is a beautiful dog. The short, smooth clean lines and elongated shape is a characteristic that uniquely sets the breed apart from other dogs. You can quickly tell and identify, without question, that a dog is a “wiener dog.”
When Evelyn Morris Hecht approached me with the idea of using Odie as a model for her next Dachshund drawing, what proud parent could refuse?
According to Evelyn, she “would love to show off the fabulous Doxie schnozz at more of an angle as well as great emotion in the eyes.” With Odie’s big schnozz and expressive emotional face, he would made a great model for her drawing.
As you can see for yourself, Evelyn captured the very likeness of Odie and the unique characteristics of the short-haired Miniature Dachshund.
I simply love her drawings and I’m sure that you will too! To see more of Evelyn Morris Hecht’s works of art, please visit her site: Top Dog Art.
I really need to get a video recorder with better resolution for you to appreciate how funny these Dachshunds are when we’re playing ball. I’ll toss the ball for Chloe and Odie will get to the ball first since he’s the fastest. Next Molly runs up to him and grabs a hold of the ball. Then Odie and Molly return the ball in a tug-a-war style running back towards me. See for yourself:
I’m not really a YouTube fan but I like their service and I can post some videos of our three Dachshunds up there for free. For some reason, I can only record 14 seconds on my cell phone but at least you can see a video of Odie and Chloe. Molly is still camera shy since her bad hair cut. I’ll try to sneak a picture of her when she’s sleeping.
This year we’re prepared for the postage increase to 41 cents, effective May 14, 2007.
Of course we decided to splurge a bit and spread the cheer around to make our favorite mailman and friends happy with a cute picture of Molly custom printed by stamps.com.
We’re reserving these cute stamps for special occasions, for that extra smile on a birthday card or thank you note. (I’m sorry Visa, you’re not going to get one of my stamps when I pay my bill.)
Some of my favorite pictures I took this week happened when I was able to get both Molly and Odie to look at the camera. The secret to getting your Dachshund pose for pictures is to get them to think the camera is a squeaky ball.
Earlier this week Molly managed to dismantle a squeaky ball trying to get the whistle inside. I found the whistle, washed it up and now I have a portable squeaky ball whistle that works better than the “come” command. Whenever I want a dachshund picture, I just blow the whistle and all three come for that special shot.
My wife really loves her Dachshund Pendant — Dachshund Jewelry Keeps Your Best Friend Close! Exclusive Heart Shaped Pendant – Dog Themed Jewelry You’ll Cherish! – From the first tail-wag, your Dachshund has wiggled his (or her) way straight into your home and heart – to stay!
It features a fine porcelain inlay with a true-to-life portrait of Odie, plus two engraved paw prints! On the back of this sweet sterling silver pendant jewelry, you’ll find more engraved paw prints, and the sentiment, “Dachshunds leave paw prints on our hearts.”
I’m sad to say,
Molly was spayed today,
All day I prayed,
She would return okay.
All right, I know I’m not a poet…
Molly was spayed today which means we’re not going to have little miniature Dachshunds running around the house. She was “out of it†when we picked her up from the Vet still struggling with the anesthesia.
They shaved her nice soft belly fur and now she’s got a five o’clock shadow growing. In a few weeks it will grow back and we’ll both enjoy rubbing her tummy.
Chloe is camera shy and if I ever captured her on film she would look like this Miniature Dachshund photograph Ralph Reinhold. Back when Chloe was a mini-miniature (puppy), she would let me take her picture all the time. The picture of her in Chloe’s bio. won the “Nature’s Lover Award” by Eukanuba several years ago.
The simplicity of charcoal drawings often amplifies the beauty of the Dachshund. Evelyn Morris Hecht brings out this beauty in her Dachshund drawing. Evelyn Morris Hecht is an incredible artist that captures the likeness of all the dogs she draws. Dachshund owners should own a print of their favorite dog. Evelyn Morris Hecht prints are available at Art.com.
Which Doxie does this print remind you of? Do you think it’s Chloe, Odie or Molly? Take a guess.
