My wife and I are always popping our head into pet stores to see if they have Dachshund Puppies. They’re always cute at that age and we can only imagine what it is like if we got a fourth puppy in the house.
You are probably thinking that we’re crazy, but I’m afraid you are wrong and that after our three go onto their happy hunting ground to chase kitties in the life after, we won’t be getting any more puppies.
It’s not like we don’t like Dachshunds, we just want to enjoy our later years without the companionship only a Dachshund can give you — lots of love and puppy kisses. Plus, if our Dachshunds live up to their full potential of 25 years, we’ll be into our retirement age. It’s just getting a little late in our life to get another dog.
I believe the root of the problem is that, like children, they’re sort of tied to you. With three of them, it makes it difficult to get away on a vacation without adequate planning or having a house sitter over for a week or two.
Once we get down to one or two, I believe that we will take an extended vacation with our lucky dogs, whichever are the last two surviving. I know that is kind of grim, but traveling with three of them is nearly impossible and I don’t even want to think about which two are the lucky dogs.
So I can only imagine what life would be like without our Dachshunds. Pretty sad since they are fantastic companions. But at some point in time future we are going to see some cute Dachshund puppies and have to remind ourselves that he is for another nice young family who can give him a good home.

An avid Three Dachshund’s reader commented on how nice our off-white carpets look and wondered how we keep our carpets clean and what the best vacuum for Dachshund hair is. First off, vacuuming your carpet can become a taxing chore especially when you have three Dachshunds that shed and have a tendency track in outside dirt. The weekly chore can be cut down to about 15 minutes with the right kind of equipment.
Over the ten years that we’ve had our dogs, we’ve tried just about every vacuum on the market and the only two that have survived the test of time are the Oreck and Dyson Vacuum cleaners. The amount of money we wasted on the cheaper (well known named) brands easily would have paid for our more expensive vacuums we own today.
We fell in love with our Dyson canister from the moment we got it home. It has incredible suction and keeps the dirt and dust inside the canister instead of spreading though out the house as you vacuum. The only problem is that the air driven bush does not work well for pet hair on our medium pile carpet. The power cord was too short making it difficult to cover some of the rooms in our house. Eventually we gave it away to my mother who lives in a small apartment and suffers with COPD making it a perfect vacuum for her.
We didn’t know how dirty our carpets were until we cleaned them with the Oreck XL. The hypo-allergenic filtration system keeps the dust and dirt in the bag so it doesn’t go spewing back out into the room. The bags hold an incredible amount of dirt so you don’t have to empty it so often like you do in bagless systems.
The light-weight design is perfect for the stairs, but again, it is designed to work on low pile carpeting. You can get a really good workout on your biceps and triceps with this vacuum. Even though this is probably the best vacuum for dog hair – and we continue to use it to clean our stairs — the upper body strength it takes to clean our caused us switch back to Dyson.
The Dyson Animal upright is what we use to clean our carpets every week. The short comings of the canister were eliminated with a 25’ power cord and a motorized brush that even picks up the baby-fine fur that Molly sheds. The large wheels make vacuuming nearly effortless and are the main reason we can vacuum our house in less than fifteen minutes.
The main problem is with Dyson is that it is a bagless system and you have to empty the canister outside. (Remember to stand up wind when you drop the contents into the trash.) But other than that, it is a really good vacuum for our carpet.
So which vacuum is best for cleaning pet hair? The Dyson Animal and Oreck XL are the best vacuums that we’ve ever owned for cleaning up after our Dachshunds. Unlike cheaper vacuums, the exceptional quality of these brands will last for many years even though the prices are substantially higher. But do you really want to sacrifice when buying the best vacuum for pet hair?

This is sorta off Dachshund topic, but it brings back some nightmares I had while we were considering relocating to Florida a few years back. I had an insane fear of one of my Dachshunds being eaten by an alligator.
This nightmare came true for Greg Lenoir who saved his Rat Terrier from a shark attack. He letting his dog swim in a lagoon where a 5 ft shark viciously grabbed the dog and took it under water. Greg dove head first with his fists balled and slammed into the shark.
He said it felt like “punching concrete,” but the shark let go off his dog and both swam back to shore while the shark went off in the other direction. He rushed his dog to the vet to take care of some serious bite wounds. Greg’s dog survived the shark attack and he will always be a hero to me and the Three Dachshunds.

Today we celebrated my birthday, 6 dog years young and I still feel like a young pup.
My wife took us out Hungry Hunter and had a really nice dinner and enjoyable evening. We’re “practicing” vegetarians so when you go to a Steak House, you know gets the meat — the Three Doxies. Of course we enjoyed the sides which was more than enough food for two meals.
I never seen three dogs enjoy such a good meal before. The couldn’t wait for me to cut it up into bite size pieces. They really like it when we bring home steaks for them, but they’re worth it!

You just got to love Google especially when they have favorable “bring your pet to work policies.†Most startup and small companies allow you to bring your dog to work. It’s really in the best interest of companies to keep their employees happy.
Over the past few years I had the pleasure of working for several companies that would let you bring your dog to work. Often I would drop off Chloe in the morning to get her bathed and pick her a few hours later nice and clean.
Everyone at the office loved it when Chloe would visit. She would usually help me design Firmware for a Fibre Channel switch (at Troika Networks) by sitting on my lap and occasionally hop on the keyboard causing a major bug with her paw.
After a while, Chloe would settle into a corner under my desk and try to sleep. If anyone would slip into the cubical unannounced, she of course would bark at him with a wagging tail.

Excuse the pun, but it’s raining cats and dogs here in Thousand Oaks today. I expect it will continue well into the New Year. Odie and Molly refusing to go potty is making it difficult for all of us.
I don’t know why these two don’t like the rain and I usually get wet standing outside with them until I make sure they go. Odie is really good and will hold it until the rain lets down but Molly who is not quite housebroken will hold it until she’s about to burst and then will find her favorite peeing and pooping corner.
On the other hand, Chloe seems to like the rain and will go outside. She certainly smells like wet dog when she comes back in.
Happy New Year,
Chloe, Odie and Molly.
